Chapter 7

Gemma

I easily baked more volume than I ever had before. Two dozen banana muffins, with and without nuts in case anyone had allergies. I had no idea if orcs even had allergies, but I couldn’t be sure. Three dozen cranberry oat cookies, and two coffee cakes. It seemed like too much, but also not enough.

There were about two hundred people in Kor’s community. One hundred fifty of them are always here, while fifty traveled for trade or guarded the village borders. There was a mix of adults, children, teens, and elders, but all of them consumed more food than me. I decided I would test the waters of what food they would actually enjoy before wasting too much of the ingredients they gifted me.

I was just finishing cleaning up when Kor and Lo came barreling in, looking for me.

“Aunt Gemma! It smells like sugar here. Do you have sweets for me?”

Kor chuckled as Lo ran to my legs, blinking up at me as if to beg for a morsel of a treat. I looked at my orc, a question in my eyes. He nodded, reading my expression and telling me that it was okay to appease Lo.

I had baked a test batch of chocolate chip cookies, only making twelve to test the oven. So I reached for one of them and gave it to Lo, hoping he wouldn’t hate it. “This is called a cookie. You’ll tell me if it’s good, yes?”

Determination furrowed his brows. “I will be the best tester, Aunt Gemma.”

He took the food from my fingers and greedily snapped it between his teeth. Lo only chewed for mere seconds before his pupils got big and he turned to his uncle. “Uncle Kor! Try, try!”

Kor hunched down to take a bite of the cookie Lo thrust at him. His eyes too went big. “This is… My tiny is a magician.”

“Do you like it?”

“I want another!” Lo yelled before he could answer.

My heart warmed, and I laughed. “Perhaps after dinner? I will save some just for you.”

“Let’s go eat dinner now so I can have more cook-ees, uncle Kor.”

“Tell your beautiful aunt thank you, Lo.”

“Thank you, aunt Gemma.” He beamed. “You are my favorite.”

“She is my favorite as well, young one.”

He kissed me to prove it.

Kor

Lo told anyone who would listen of the best food he had ever tasted, bragging about my Gemma’s cook-ees. I had to send Dramon with him to assure the younger ones they would be able to have some with breakfast tomorrow so that they did not trample her down and demand the food.

She was glowing, my bride, eating her dinner at my side with such lovely smiles to everyone who spoke to her. She did not eat a fraction of the food that my people typically consumed, yet appeared utterly stuffed with her small portions. It gave me a great sense of pride to fill her belly to the brim. A satiated mate was the best kind.

My sister and her friends, the women
